Fleming Farm

On Saturday morning, Jeff and I got up around 8:3o and drove out to Brookview Farm. Brookview Farm is a family owned and operated certified organic farm located in Manakin-Sabot, VA which is only about 15 minutes from our house. Every Saturday morning, they open a Farmers Market with meats, eggs, whipped honey, and other merchandise. The market is located inside an old farmhouse on the property. We bought a dozen eggs that had been gathered that morning, some whipped honey, and an organic cookbook. Their meats looked very fresh but were a bit pricey. We then ventured into Goochland to visit the Goochland Farmers Market. This market is open air and much larger than the Brookview Farm. Vendors are only allowed to participate if they are selling something they have produced themselves. There were vendors selling homemade lotions and soaps, fresh flowers, organic dog treats, fruits, and vegetables. We bought Kathy a mother's day gift and for ourselves we purchased strawberry plants, tomato plants, cilantro, and basil.

On the way home, we stopped Luck Stone to buy some additional topsoil. For $14 we were able to load up the bed of Jeff's truck with topsoil. When we pulled in, I didn't realize that a huge front end loader would be dumping the soil right into the truck. Something like that had to be documented.

Back at home, we fixed breakfast with our fresh eggs and toast topped with a little bit of butter and whipped honey. Delicious! Then it was time to get to work.

We unloaded the top soil and finished filling in the garden and then placed soil where we planned to plant grass seed. Then we planted all of our "crops" as well as some sunflowers and peonies (my fave).

We realized we still needed a couple of items so we hopped back in the car and went to Southern States for some straw to place over the grass seed, some tomato cages, and some plant markers. The last stop was Home Depot for some flowers to line the front of the garden to make it look pretty-pink and yellow gerbera daisies were my choice.

We are so proud of all the work we did and we look forward to strawberries, green beans, bell peppers, jalapenos, squash, cilantro, basil, mint, cucumbers, tomatoes and sunflower seeds.

We also completed the backyard grilling area by placing slate tiles in front of the area and putting chairs and a small table back there.
