The Tale of our Updated Kitchen

When Lisa was here a few weeks ago, we were telling her how much we hated our kitchen. She told us she had just seen a home improvement show where a couple was redoing their kitchen and they painted their cabinets. Cabinets JUST LIKE ours!! That is all we needed to hear to finally take the plunge and update our dated kitchen.

Last week we decided during a 5 minute conversation that we would tackle the project last weekend. On Friday, Jeff made it home by 5 and I left work on time for once. We met at home and jumped in the car for a drive to Ikea in Woodbridge, VA. I love Ikea...every single thing about it. I don't care that the furniture is not real wood. I think it is all adorable and DANG is it affordable.

We arrived in Woodbridge around 7pm and Jeff had to tug on my shirt to slow me down as I raced up the escalator and into the kitchen section to purchase the counter tops we have had our eyes on for three years. We decided on the double white farm sink instead of the single, made a quick walk through the rest of the showroom and grabbed several white matted frames. We were back on the road by 9 and home by 10:15pm...and work began.

We removed the cabinet doors, emptied all the cabinets and primed the cabinet bases all on Friday night. On Saturday we were up early. Jeff began ripping off counter tops while I went to Sherwin Williams for the cabinet paint and Bear Creek Coffee for coffee and breakfast. The rest of the day was spent painting, demo-ing, cutting the new counter tops, installing the new counter tops, and installing the heaviest sink on earth.

When we had finally had enough we showered and headed to Danielle and Steve's for some drinks, games and dinner.

On Sunday we were back at it. More counter top installing and A LOT more painting but at the end of the day we were pretty much finished. Tonight Jeff is putting the cabinet knobs on which will leave back splash tiling as the only thing on our to finish list.

Again, we are so proud of all the work and I am so thankful for my handy husband. Oh yeah-and your jaws would drop if you knew how LITTLE money we spent on the whole shebang. Yeah-we are SO thrifty.
