Tough Travel

When we woke up on Friday morning, we realized the forecast for Norfolk (our final destination) was snow, snow, snow. So, we switched our final destination to Dulles in hopes we could make it back and drive to Suffolk in time for our niece's 1st birthday party. Well...air traffic control and the weather had different plans for us. Our flight from Reno to San Francisco was delayed, with us arriving after our connecting flight to Dulles was set to depart. Shit.

When our plane landed in San Fran, we hauled ass to our gate despite the fact the monitor indicated a closed flight. The plane was still there. Well, apparently it had already left the gate but returned due to a mechanical issue. We, along with a few other late comers, waved our hands in the window at the pilots, we spoke to the gate reps at a different gate, we begged and pleaded...and they let us on!!!

We waited a bit longer for the flight to take off while they fixed the issue and then luckily I slept the entire red eye flight to Dulles. Uncle Rick and Katherine picked us up from the airport and took us back to their house where Ellen was preparing a delicious breakfast. Just what we wanted after an overnight flight. We then borrowed Rick and Ellen's 12 year old volvo with more than 230,000 miles on it to brave the snowy roads on the way to Suffolk for the party.

When we set out, things were fine. As we continued on, the roads became much worse, there were stuck cars everywhere, accidents all over, tow trucks rescuing folks and tractor trailers in ditches. Jeff was an expert driver as usual and I was snapping pics with the new Nikon at every turn. We surprisingly made it safely back to our house and gave up on continuing on to Suffolk due to the danger of the roads. Phew.
Word to the Wise-Don't Drive When There is a Blizzard Outside. Also-VDOT is the worst. We were on 64 yesterday DIRECTLY BEHIND a VDOT truck who WASN'T PLOWING. WHAT?!
