On Sunday, we knew Ginger wanted to get out of the house so we took her on a walk and swim over at Belle Isle State Park. To access Belle Isle, you must cross a suspended bridge downtown near Brown's Island. Belle Isle housed prisoners during the Civil War and many, many men perished there. There are quite a few Civil War ruins to be found and something tells me some creepy things happen there after dark. During the day, however, it is beautiful and there are some great walking/biking paths. There are some places on the island that were hollowed out to hold canons to protect the island from attack, but because of the rapids in the river surrounding the island, no guns were ever brought over and obviously no shots ever fired.
I am sometimes down on Richmond and the fact that it doesn't have as much going on as other larger cities, but things like Belle Isle make me appreciate it so much.
