Homecoming at Lyles Church

Last week my grandmother hinted that she might want Jeff and I to join her at the Lyles Baptist Church homecoming so we agreed to go. Sunday morning, we picked up Annie at Cedarfield and drove the 45 minutes out to Wilmington, VA. Annie grew up in Fluvanna County and so was able to provide an interesting travelogue for the entire car ride. We passed through Columbia, VA or what Annie's father called the Finished Town and took the route from Columbia through the country that Annie's school bus used to take when she was little. We ended up being an hour early by mistake so we drove into Palmyra, Virginia where my great grandfather (D-Dad) was the judge many many years ago. We visited the courthouse where he used to hold court and passed by the house that Gran (my great grandmother) and D-Dad lived in in their older age. Before heading back to the church, we stopped at a new and "dahlin" (as Annie would say) convenience store for a "little something to wet our mouths." Back at the church, we took a seat towards to the front so Annie could point out the stained glass window that is dedicated to members of our family. The service was interesting to say the least but secretly I was thinking about the delicious lunch that was waiting for us in the church basement. Lyles Homecoming=more deviled eggs, ham biscuits, congealed salads, and chocolate chess pie than you can ever imagine. And of course there is fried chicken, chicken salad, cole slaw and biscuits. After sampling many different varieties of the ham biscuits and deviled eggs, we headed down the hill to the cemetary to visit my grandfather Poppy. Annie was very pleased with the state of his tombstone and she was in very good spirits.



It had been a while since I had been to Lyles and it was good to visit again.
