We spent 95 percent of our weekend outside. The 5 percent was spent sleeping and showering. It all started on Friday evening when we headed downtown to the Dominion Riverrock event on Browns Island. Dominion Riverrock is Richmond's own sports and outdoors festival showcasing the riverfront. Clayton was running in the Filthy 5-K so we met Cortney and two of C&C's friends down by the finish line to cheer Clayton on. Because of an injury at the finish line blocking off the mud pit, Clayton didn't finish quite as muddy as some of the other racers but he was still quite dirty.
We chatted with Cortney, Jackie and Thomas and checked out the kayak canal crasher competition and some of the biking competition while we waited for Clayton to rinse off and change. We finished the night with dinner at Delux.
We started Saturday morning with a trip to the Goochland Farmers Market for some vegetable plants for our garden and then we were home to pack up our canoe, some refreshments, ginger, and our fishing poles for an afternoon on the river. Ginger loves the water but we have never tried bringing her in the canoe with us until Saturday. She started in the river with a quick swim and then we coaxed her into the canoe...something she was certainly UNsure about. But, she settled in and rode along with us just fine and we couldn't be more happier that she can now join us on our days on the river. We paddled along until we found the perfect island to pull up to and then we all were out of the boat for fishing, sunning and swimming.
We left the river around 4, swung by the house to shower and change and then headed off for more Dominion Riverrock. We stopped by Martin's on the way so we could have sandwiches and beers while relaxing on our blanket on Brown's Island. We watched more kayak canal crashers and more bike competition before settling in to watch Farm Vegas and Robert Randolph and the Family Band perform. Cortney and Clayton joined us and we ended the night at our neighborhood bar, City Limit.
This morning we were up and at em again with plans to plant our garden, Jeff's hops and some flowers on our deck. We went to our home away from home-Home Depot-for supplies and spent the rest of the afternoon working in the yard. Just when we were ready for a break, we heard the familiar tune of an ice cream truck in our neighborhood. We then heard the four precious kids down the street squealing in delight. We gathered up our spare change and then joined the kiddies on the side of the street and waited for the truck to come our way. A firecracker and an Italian ice were the perfect snacks for a hot day of working outside.
This was such a good weekend spent together and with friends taking advantage of all that Richmond has to offer.

You're growing your own hops? That is awesome! My husband will be jealous :)
Yes, we have been thinking about it for quite some time and are giving it a try. Wish us luck. Have you made your first batch yet?
