On labor day this year we made a last minute decision to go to see the Hokies play Georgia Tech in the season opener in Blacksburg. This was a night game and we knew we would have to return home after the game meaning we would get home in the middle of the night with a full day's work waiting for us the next day. But, knowing that in years to come it will be harder to do things like this, we decided to throw caution to the wind and called our fellow loyal Hokie fans, Danielle and Steve, to see if they would like to join us. They were enthusiastically on board so we picked them up in Charlottesville and made our way to our beloved Blacksburg for the game.
We started with food at PK's and then set up shop in our tailgate spot in Lot 3 for some last minute brewskis before entering the stadium. The forecast threatened a giant rainstorm so Jeff wore his waders and we all grabbed our best rain gear to prep for it not.to.rain.at.all. Poor Jeff was so hot in his waders that he spent most of the game with them around his ankles.
We had been invited to the WMJ suite so when the time came to go up there, Jeff grabbed his cousin's white canvas tennis shoes (hilarious looking) and we went for a visit with Jeff's coworkers.
At the end of the game, we were certain we would lose so Jeff left early to go get the car started and check on the dogs, Danielle and I also left our seats to go to the bathroom. When we came out, we watched for a second on TV before heading back to the car when WHOA! the kicker made the field goal and we were back in the game. We sprinted back to our seats for the most exciting ending to a game we had seen in a long time. SO FUN!
We finally made it out of the parking lot around 11:30pm and thanks to Steve for chatting with me the entire way back to Charlottesville so I would stay awake.
Tuesday morning was rough to say the least but we made it and were happy we chose that game to attend out of all the rest that season given our season was mostly shite.
